Stressing Out About Your Kids Results?
As parents, we all worry about our kid’s well-being and their future. Furthermore, simply revising is not helping much with examination deadlines creeping closer📅. Here at BlueTree Education, we have complied a few effective study techniques that can help bring your child to their desired AL1! Grab a pen 🖊️and a notebook📒 while we discuss about these tips and tricks.
In this article we will be segmenting the guides into three parts:
- Ample time left for exam preparation
- Crunch time
- Exam Day
Ample Time Left for Exam Preparations
This is the time when many students really benefit from getting a head start on their studies before exams. Preparing early doesn’t make you more ‘kiasu’—as some might say. In fact, starting ahead gives your child the opportunity to ask questions and improve through self-discipline.
1. Organising Your Study Space
By doing so, not only is their study space mess free but so will their mind be. Research has shown that by cleaning our workspace up regularly, the human mind functions better too.
2. Creating a To-Do List
Maintaining a to-do list helps us stay organized and develop greater self-discipline. Checking off tasks not only makes work more efficient but also provides a deeply satisfying sense of accomplishment. This approach will be particularly useful during the final stretch, so keep reading for more tips.
3. Feed Your Brain
Having a nutritious breakfast with slow-release carbohydrates and proteins provides our body and brain with a steady source of energy throughout the day. It’s best to avoid sugary foods and drinks, though an occasional treat is a must!
Crunch Time
An unavoidable phase dreaded by students and a major stress point for parents who want to support their children through this tough period. Students often feel overwhelmed, worrying about whether they can complete their revisions in time or if their study materials are adequate.
1. Prioritising Sleep
We know that burning the midnight oil is a common habit among students, but honestly, it’s one of the least effective things they can do before a major exam. As parents, we understand the importance of our children getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, even outside of exam periods. To support them, we might consider preparing a cup of chamomile tea to help them relax and unwind.
2. The Retrieval Practice
There’s a strategy called ‘pull, don’t push’ or the retrieval practice that’s worth considering. It means that even though our kids are working hard, they shouldn’t overwhelm themselves with too much information at once. Instead, they should take short breaks, test themselves on what they’ve just studied, and then move on to a new topic or chapter. This approach helps ensure they truly understand what they’ve revised rather than just memorizing it.
3. Have a Study Plan
As we discussed earlier about the importance of consistency with a to-do list, during crunch time, it’s helpful to switch to a structured study plan. This plan should allocate specific times for each subject and include short breaks. Breaks are crucial because without adequate rest, the brain won’t effectively retain any information, no matter how much is crammed.
Exam Day
The big day is finally here! I know kids are feeling a mix of excitement and nerves as they head into their exams. It’s a culmination of all their hard work, and while it’s natural for them to feel anxious, it’s important for us to offer them reassurance. They’ve prepared diligently, and now it’s time for them to show what they’ve learned. Let’s remind them to stay positive and confident, and let them know we’re here to support them no matter what.
1. Arrive Early to The Examination Venue
Encourage your kids to arrive at least 30 minutes before the exam starts. This extra time allows them to get settled, do some last-minute revision, and calm their nerves. Arriving early helps avoid the stress of rushing, ensuring they won’t be flustered or uncomfortable when the exam begins. It’s all about giving them a chance to prepare mentally and physically, so they can start the exam feeling more at ease.
2. Scan Through and Give Appropriate Time Allocation
While your child is taking the exam, remind them to quickly scan through the papers at the beginning to ensure there are no missing pages. It’s also helpful to allocate specific time for each section to manage their time effectively. If they encounter questions, they’re unsure about, it’s best to skip those and come back to them later. This approach helps them stay focused and makes the most of their exam time.
3. Running Out of Time?
If your child feels like they’re running out of time during the exam, suggest they jot down key points in bullet form. This strategy might still earn them some marks, even if they can’t write full answers. Just remind them that this approach isn’t a guaranteed way to get marks, so it’s crucial for them to keep an eye on the clock and pace themselves throughout the exam.
The Journey to Exam Readiness
As we wrap up, remember that effective exam preparation is a journey, not just a sprint. From starting early to managing crunch time and navigating exam day, each step plays a crucial role in helping our kids achieve their best. By staying organized with a study plan, prioritizing rest and sleep, and offering calm support, we can help our children face their exams with confidence and clarity. Our exam preparation tips and strategies can make a significant difference in their performance and overall well-being. So, let’s keep guiding and supporting them every step of the way, ensuring they have the best possible chance to succeed.
