Understanding the Science Behind the Reaction

When baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) mix, they undergo an acid-base reaction:

  • Acid-Base Reaction: The acetic acid in vinegar reacts with the sodium bicarbonate in baking soda, resulting in the formation of carbonic acid.
  • Decomposition: Carbonic acid is unstable and quickly decomposes into carbon dioxide gas and water.
  • Gas Expansion: The carbon dioxide gas produced fills the balloon, causing it to inflate.

This experiment demonstrates how mixing a solid (baking soda) with a liquid (vinegar) can produce a gas (carbon dioxide), showcasing a fundamental concept in chemistry.

Procedure:

  1. Prepare the Balloon: Using the funnel, add about two tablespoons of baking soda into the balloon.

  3. Attach the Balloon: Carefully stretch the opening of the balloon over the neck of the bottle without letting the baking soda fall into the vinegar yet.
  4. Initiate the Reaction: Lift the balloon, allowing the baking soda to mix with the vinegar in the bottle.
  5. Observe: Watch as the balloon inflates due to the carbon dioxide gas produced.

This simple experiment not only demonstrates a chemical reaction but also introduces concepts like gas production and pressure.
