PSLE Top FAQs: Dos and Don’ts during PSLE Math & Science Exams

PSLE Top FAQs

After a year of dedicated preparation, the moment has finally arrived: the PSLE exam. As your child gears up for this important milestone, you might find yourself wondering if they’re truly ready. Perhaps you have lingering questions about what they’re allowed to bring into the exam hall.

PSLE is a significant milestone in every Singaporean student’s academic journey. It’s only natural for both parents and students to experience a blend of excitement and apprehension as we approach the exam season.  However, with careful planning and strategic preparation, navigating the PSLE can be a manageable and ultimately rewarding experience.

To ease your concerns and ensure a smooth testing experience, we’ve compiled a list of the top PSLE FAQs – covering everything from stationery choices to exam protocol. Let’s dive in!

Dos and Don’ts during PSLE Math & Science Exams

1. Can we bring in a highlighter?
Yes, absolutely! Highlighting questions is permitted, but remember to highlight only the questions, not the answers. This can help your child stay organized and focused as they tackle each question.

2. Are gel pens allowed?

They are discouraged. Ballpoint pens are encouraged. Some good brands that our BlueTree kids have endorsed are Pilot Ballpoint (0.5 mm tip) and Zebra Sarasa pens. 🙂

Ballpoint pens with 0.5 mm tip are recommended over pens with 0.7 mm tips as it reduces the risk of possible smudging. We want the writing to be as clear as possible so that it will be easier for the markers to mark your child’s working & answers.

For drawings of diagrams, your child can use a sharp 2B pencil.

3. Are only blue pens allowed?
No, your child can write in any colours. Exam markers will mark the answers/workings on the answer sheet and answer lines. However, we do recommend using conventional colours like blue or black pens as these colours are easier to read!

4. Are eraseable pens allowed?

While eraseable pens may seem convenient, it’s important to note that they are not encouraged for PSLE exams. The primary reason being that the ink from these pens may not be as visible to markers when they assess the papers. PSLE markers can only evaluate what is clearly visible on the script. Therefore, to prevent any potential loss of marks, it’s best to steer clear of erasable pens altogether.

5. Are correction tapes allowed?
As of the 2021 PSLE, correction tapes are no longer allowed. With the scripts scanned and marked by computers, the correction taped parts will appear dark and black.

Encourage your child to double-check their work and avoid the need for corrections whenever possible.

6. Can my child ask for more blank paper during exam?
No. There are no more blank papers given.  All answers must be completed directly in the provided answer booklets. Encourage your child to plan their work carefully and utilize the space provided efficiently.

7. Are only approved scientific calculators allowed for the PSLE Math Paper?

Yes. All calculators must be approved by the school before the PSLE Exam day. Upon which, a special sticker will be pasted on them. Your child would not be allowed to bring in calculators which have not been pre-approved before.

It is important to ensure that the calculator is in working condition (including the battery power). It will be best to replace the battery before the exam and if you are unsure, it doesn’t hurt to bring along a spare calculator into the exam hall.

8. What if my child accidentally brings along an electronic device into the exam hall?

Your child should not bring along any mobile phones, smart watches, and other devices with them.

In the case where your child accidentally brings along an electronic device into the exam hall, please surrender them to the invigilators immediately. Your child would not be penalised if they were to do so before the examination begins.

That’s all we have for now for the PSLE Top FAQs. If you have more questions about the exams, feel free to approach any of our friendly teachers. We’re here to support you and ensure that you feel confident and prepared for the upcoming PSLE exams. Good luck, and remember, you’ve got this!
