How to help your child learn Primary School Science?

Learning Primary School Science is not meant to be hard!

During the Primary school education journey, one possible obstacle your child may be faced with is to do well in the Primary Science examinations. For some, it can be a daunting task due to various concerns, such as the requirement of providing specific scientific definitions and identification of different living things.

Fortunately, these worries are common and can be addressed through the following studying tips that parents can consider in order to help your child enjoy and excel in Primary Science.

1. Learn with an inquisitive mind

First, encourage your child to learn with an inquisitive mind. Avoid stressing on the goal to achieve sterling results in the subject. Instead, undertake an indirect approach of engaging your child to ask questions in the things around us.

For example, why does an ice cube melt when left out of the refrigerator? Why do certain animals like chicken lay eggs? This will help to cultivate an inquisitive mind that builds interest for the field of Science. Interest is the first step to excelling in Primary School Science!

2. Adopt a hands-on learning approach

Second, replace textbook-inclined learning with experiential learning. This means that you should consider engaging your child to learn science better through experiments. Since multiple senses are used, this will help your child will remember the scientific processes better. This is better than reading and writing, which are more limited in retaining memory.

For example, to prove that water has three states, which are the solid, liquid and gaseous states, ask your child to try placing a glass of water in the refrigerator and in the open space (at room temperature). Should you have safety concerns over certain experiments, an alternative approach is to show your child online videos of the experiments which are widely available on the Internet.

3. Keep a personal diary

Third, you can consider encouraging your child to keep a personal diary to write personal thoughts. They can write about what he or she have learnt from experiments observed, concepts taught in class as well as any other things that may have piqued the child’s curiosity. This is to help reinforce their learning of certain scientific concepts in an enjoyable way.

Share with your child that these approaches introduced are very relevant and undertaken even by scientists and inventors. It is through inquisitiveness and passion to uncover the mysteries behind every process that gave rise to amazing discoveries and inventions. Therefore, we hope that parents will consider these learning points! They will help your child learn science in an enjoyable, exciting and enriching way.
